If you have a cakey occasion coming up. you might be wondering:
‘What sort of cake do I want?’
‘How can I get the best servings?’
‘What heights are available?’
These are the least of your queries really… I mean, you still have flavour, design, storage, travel and so on, and so on.
But this post right here, is to explain to you a little about the heights of cakes you can get. Yes! There is more than just a slab cake and a tiered cake!
So next time you are asking your baker for a quote, take the following into consideration.
A slab cake is usually rectangular, generally 2″ tall, and really great for basic designs (the one pictured is quite detailed). No fuss with cutting around novelty shaped cakes either.
A single tiered cake is exactly as it sounds. Just one tier. Single tiers are generally taller than a slab cake, and mine personally sit at approx. 3.5″-4″ tall.
2 TIERED CAKE
Again, exactly as it sounds… 2 tiers of cakes stacked on top of each other. The only thing you have to remember with this is that the two tiers are different sizes (in diameter), which makes them differ from the 2 heights explained below.
An extended tier is a great way to get a little more height in your cake. Whether this is for serving purposes or for design purposes. Extended tiers are generally 1.5 cakes tall.
A double barrel cake, is again, the same diameter the entire way from top to bottom, but they are even taller! Double barrel cakes generally are 2 cakes tall. These beauties are great for creating drip cakes.
It’s a good idea to place a separating cake board for the double barrel cakes (and sometimes your extended tiers), for easier cutting.
